Obama Orders More US Troops to Afghanistan
In his first major military move as Commander-in-Chief, President Barack Obama has approved a nearly 50 percent increase in the number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan, on top of a smaller increase ordered by former-President Bush and already implemented.
The long-awaited announcement came in a written statement from the president. The statement says “the situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan demands urgent attention and swift action.” President Obama says the Taliban has been “resurgent” in Afghanistan and that the al-Qaida terrorist network is supporting it from safe havens in Pakistan. The president says the troop increase is needed “to stabilize a deteriorating situation,” which he says “has not received the strategic attention, direction and resources it urgently requires.” Click here to read more.
